Valentina you totally saved my eyebrows …
Hello. My name is Christine Cirillo and I am a beauty adviser and make up artist for Christian Dior and Valentina happened to be doing an eyebrow shaping and waxing event at the Lord n Taylor in the Monmouth Mall.
I WISH I would have met her sooner!!! I have been getting my eyebrows threaded for years now and I will never go back threading them ever again!!!!
Valentina brought to my attention how badly my eyebrows were damaged from getting them threaded. I had so many bald spots in my eyebrows and hairs were growing in all different directions. Valentina you totally saved my eyebrows and I have never felt so comfortable before in my life. You had me relaxed and SHOWED me where my brows were funky!

I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with one of their talented writers, Abby Penning, during an interview which focused on my skin care background and expertise in aesthetics. Can Men Wax Their Facial Hair?
Question: My husband is looking for relief from his regular shaving routing. He shaves in the morning and it’s back again at night. Could he wax his facial hair so he doesn’t have to shave so much?
Valentina: I never recommend for men to wax their facial hair. First, the hair on men’s faces is much more coarse and thick than body hair. This makes it more difficult to remove. Second, the skin on the face is sensitive. These two combinations can make for some disastrous results if a man waxes his face.
I can sympathize with your husband not wanting to have to shave so often. My preferred method of hair removal for a man’s face is laser. Although it is costly, results are excellent.
Laser hair removal uses laser light to pass a light beam through the skin. The laser targets dark pigment, called melanin, in hair. When the light beam hits the hair follicle it is destroyed instantly from the intense heat. Patients usually report a slight stinging sensation when the laser is activated.
In most cases, laser hair removal slows hair regrowth, which could be excellent for your husband. Several treatments can nearly remove all of the hair for a very long period of time.

CAN WAXING CAUSE INGROWN HAIRS?

Question: Hi Valentina, I often get ingrown hairs after shaving. I was thinking of waxing instead. Does waxing also cause ingrown hairs?
Valentina: No, waxing does not cause ingrown hairs, waxing actually prevents ingrown hairs. When you shave, you cut the hair at the skin's surface, leaving it with a flat top. New skin cells can grow over the left over hair before it has a chance to grow over the surface again. When this happens, often times the flat top cannot poke through your skin cells, and the hair gets trapped under the skin.
When you wax, you are removing the entire hair from the root. A new, fresh hair grows back with a pointed tip that can easily break through the skin's surface, reducing the chance for ingrown hairs.
Whether you wax or shave, it's good practice to exfoliate your legs a 2-3 times a week to encourage the turnover of dead skin cells. This will help those who shave reduce ingrown hairs and keep skin smooth and soft.
You don't have to buy anything expensive. A great homemade exfoliator can consist of sea salt mixed with some avocado oil or jojoba oil. You can even add a drop or two of your favorite scented essential oil to your personalized product! Not only does this work great to slough away dead skin cells, but it leaves your skin incredibly hydrated and radiant! It's one of my favorite recipes.

ASK VALENTINA: NJ SKIN CARE SPECIALIST SHARES TIPS FOR KEEPING OILY SKIN DRY IN SUMMER
Question: Hi Val, I have very oily skin. In the summer, it seems to get worse. If it’s hot outside, it feels like the second I walk out the door my face is full of oil. How can I keep my skin from getting too oily in the hot summer weather?
Valentina: Summer time can indeed be a disaster for anyone with oily skin. The face often appears very shiny and makeup can easily melt right off due to the buildup of oil. It’s especially important that people with oily skin follow these simple tips to help prevent excess oil buildup.
1. Keep your skin clean over summer by washing twice a day. The soap you choose is extremely important. A harsh soap will over-dry your skin, causing even more oil to develop. A gentle antibacterial soap or special cleansing soap is good for oily skin. Look for ingredients chamomile and tea tree oil if you want to go herbal.
2. Use a Toner specifically for your type of skin: I don’t recommend harsh astringents, as I said, stripping too much oil from your skin will only cause skin to produce even more. Use a balancing Toner for oily skin after each washing. This will help dry up oily spots and hydrate dry areas, for combination skin. During the day, blot your skin with a pad soaked with the toner. You will have to reapply make up in between. But you can blog to lift excess oil. You can also blot with a dry tissue or any other clean cloth that will absorb oil.
3. Be careful with moisturizers! If you have combination skin, you need to moisturize areas of your skin that are dry. If your skin is completely oily, you need very little to no moisturizer. And choose a moisturizer that balances oily skin. (link to moisturizer for oily skin)
4. Use a clay masque at night to help reduce oil.
5. Use makeup that is oil free. Mineral makeup works great for oily skin.
Be sure to follow these few guidelines over summer when oil production can be at its highest! Keep absorbing tissues on hand to gently blot excess oil away. And remember, do not over wash your skin to dry up all of the oil! Be gentle and kind to your skin, follow these rules and your skin will be kind to you!

THE TRUTH ABOUT BRAZILIAN BIKINI WAXING: NJ WAX EXPERT ANSWERS
Question: Hi Valentina, I have heard that Brazilian waxes can be dangerous and can transmit disease. Is this true?
Valentina: When done properly, Brazilian waxing is very safe. There are many myths about Brazilian waxing. The truth is, when you go to a professional day spa that follows proper sanitary conditions, there is nothing unsafe about getting a Brazilian. Below are answers to some common questions as well as precautions to consider if you are having this procedure.
1. Do NOT get any waxing done if you are on medication, especially Acutane. Some medications can increase skin’s sensitivity, and your skin can literally be pulled right off if the technician is not careful. If you are on any medications, ask your doctor if it is safe to have waxing performed.
2. Do NOT get any waxing done after going tanning. Again, your skin is sensitive and you risk burning or tearing the skin.
3. Be sure the facility is properly licensed and be sure technicians are not only licensed, but highly trained in Brazilian wax (Licenses should be hanging in the front of the salon, visible to customers). Ask how long the technician has been performing this procedure and be sure to let them know that you only want someone highly skilled in Brazilian waxing.
4. You can NOT get an STD from Brazilian waxing. Due to the high temperature the wax is kept at, bacteria nor viruses can live within the wax.
5. Be sure your technician is wearing latex gloves. Many spas wear latex gloves during a Brazilian wax. Don’t be embarrassed or offended. This is a proper sanitary precaution to protect both you and the technician.
Before beginning, your technician should have a consultation with you and ask if you are on any medications that could sensitize the skin, especially Retin-A. They should ask if you have been tanning recently and ensure that you are not on your period, or about to get your period. If the technician does not have this proper consultation with you, this is a good sign to forgo your appointment and seek out a qualified facility that follows proper procedure.

ASK VALENTINA, NJ SPA GURU:QUESTIONS ABOUT BRAZILIAN WAXING
Question: Hi Valentina, I do not live in NJ but I have followed your blog postings on waxing so I wanted to ask you something about the Brazilian bikini wax. I am considering having the procedure done for the first time to surprise my fiancée. Will I be able to have sex after I get waxed? And when the hair starts to grow in will it bother my fiancée when we have sex? I know when I shave the stubbles can be scratchy.
Valentina: I definitely do not recommend having sex within 24 hours after your first Brazilian wax. Until you get used to the procedure, your skin will be red, tender, and perhaps a little swollen.
Sexual intercourse, friction or tight clothing immediately after your waxing can irritate the area. So plan to have your Brazilian wax a few days before the actual surprise.
As for stubble, the nice aspect of waxing versus shaving is that the hair grows in softer.
When you shave, you cut the hair at the skin’s surface. The hair then has a flat, jagged edge. It’s course when it begins to pop back through the skin’s surface again. Waxing removes the hair from the root, so a new hair must re-grown. The tip is soft and pointed, not stubbly. Also, in time, less hair will grow back which means less frequent visits for your wax appointment.

NJ WAX EXPERT VALENTINA ANSWERS HOW TO INGROWN HAIRS.
Question:
After I shave my legs I get l always wind up getting ingrown hairs. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
Valentina:
In order to treat ingrown hairs, it is important to understand what they are. Ingrown hairs, also called razor bumps, result when the shaved hair gets trapped inside the follicle or grows back into the skin.
Shaving cuts the hair in a blunt, jagged fashion. Often times, the jagged edge can have trouble growing back through the hair follicle and can become twisted stuck underneath new skin cells that have accumulated. Ingrown hairs can appear as sore red bumps and be quite unsightly. There are several ways to treat and prevent ingrown hairs, I have listed a few below.
You should know, however, that the best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to wax. Waxing completely removes the hair from the root, allowing for new hair to grow back in. The new hair has a soft, pointed tip that can easily break through the surface of the skin, lessening the likelihood of ingrown hairs. However, if you prefer shaving, the tips below should help.
1. Exfoliating your legs frequently can help prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells, which block hair from growing in resulting in ingrown hairs. Choose a gentle product that can be used several times a week, before and in between shaves.
2. Treat your ingrown hairs with Salicylic acid, an over the counter, dermatological-grade ingredient that exfoliates, moisturizes, clears pores and can help prevent infection. (salicylic acid is found in many common acne cleansers and treatments). Witch Hazel is also a great OTC remedy to help reduce painful swelling.
3. Use a shaving cream that is specially formulated for sensitive skin. Try to avoid foam-based creams, instead opt for products that are high in lubricating agents.
4. Make sure you do not use products or lotions on your legs that have high amounts of fragrance or alcohol. This can worsen your condition by drying out the skin and closing the pores, further trapping hairs beneath the surface.
5. Forget what you’ve been told about shaving against the grain. To avoid razor bumps, use a single-blade razor and shave WITH the grain. It is much gentler on your skin while you are recovering from bouts of razor bumps.

HOW TO GET THE PERFECT EYEBROW SHAPE FOR YOUR FACE
The shape of your eyebrows can dramatically change your appearance.
Eyebrows flatter your face, balance your unique features and are the frame for your eyes. A few wrong plucks could undo the right shape, length, and width for your face.

1.To measure where your eyebrow should begin, imagine an invisible line running from the inside corner of your eye to the outermost point of your nose (hold a pencil up for a more precise look).
2.To measure where you arch should peak, imagine another invisible line running from the outermost point of your nose to the outermost part of your iris. This is where your arch should peak.
3. How Thick should your eyebrows be? This depends on the shape of your face. There are a few rules of thumb to go by. For a round face, generally a more dramatic arch can draw attention away from the roundness. Long faces should stay away from high arches, which only makes the face appear longer. Instead, your eyebrows should be flatter with less of an arch to give the illusion of a shorter face. If you have a very angular face with prominent jaws, stay away from eyebrows that are equally as angular. Keep eyebrows more round to soften the sharp angles of your face.
The first thing I do when I see a client for eyebrow shaping at my NJ spa is study their face straight on. I observe their facial features and take a mental measurement of the structure of their face. Remember, eyebrows do not come in a ‘one size fits all’ strategy. That is why I do not recommend people bring in photos of eyebrows that they want. Chances are, these eyebrows will not look good on your face. We have to work to enhance your bone structure and flatter your eyes.
Although they may not be the first thing people notice, properly groomed eyebrows can give you an instant makeover, open your eye area and make you look several years younger. You’ll feel instantly more confident.

NJ SKIN CARE EXPERT SAYS AVOID UNSIGHTLY RAZOR BUMPS, THROW AWAY YOUR RAZOR
Another reason to wax your body instead of shaving; folliculitis. Otherwise known as razor bumps.
According to NJ skin care expert, Valentina Chistova, folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle that appears as an eruption of skin surrounding a hair or pore. Usually red bumps, or little pus bumps, characterize the disease known to many as razor burn.
There is no ‘cure’ for folliculitis, although there are treatments that can be prescribed to help clear an aggressive outbreak. Eliminating external aggravating factors, such as shaving, is the best option for long term control.
Waxing has many benefits over shaving. For starters, shaving cuts the hair, so it has a flat tip that sometimes has trouble poking through the skin — this can cause ingrown hairs and irritations.
Waxing pulls out the hair completely from the root, so when it grows in, it has a natural, pointed tip that can poke through skin easier.

NJ Day Spa Owner Talks About Surviving The Recession
Let’s face it, although a relaxing massage will help reduce stress and tension and improve overall health many different ways, insurance won’t pay for you to heal yourself through massage. Nope. Insurance will only cover traditional forms of health care like doctor visits or prescribed medication.
So, most Americans are foregoing their regular trips to the spa for services like massages and facials. Services that not only help you feel better, but also help you look better. And, when you look great, you feel great.
Undoubtedly, many Americans are having an especially difficult time struggling through the economy. Many of their treasured healing rituals have been cut from their budget.

We recently sat down with spa guru Valentina Chistova to hear her thoughts on the economy, her business, and why the ‘Aquamedica Cares’ program has worked so well for her. The following is an excerpt from our interview with her.
TCR: You have been giving so much for so little, what is your reason behind this? Knowing that you have such a beautiful facility, why in an environment like yours did you choose to discount your services so much?
VALENTINA: We are all in the same boat with the economy situation, and we can all help each other. We are well known in the area with a large clientele, and we would like our guests to continue to enjoy the services that we offer. It is good for the clients and it is good for us. Discounting the services so clients can still afford to come keeps our employees busy so that they can pay their bills and maintain their position here. The clients of course get the benefit of receiving their favorite spa services at special ‘recession proof’ prices. Instead of sitting with no business, we decided that we can help people get through this tough time, we can help them feel better, proving more than ever that spa is not only luxurious, but offers many health benefits as well.
TCR: What do you mean for health? People come to the spa for luxury services and pampering. Normally consumers don’t consider the spa someplace to go for ‘health benefits’. With an establishment like yours, people get the feeling that this is a very pampering environment.
VALENTINA: It is about luxury here. But at the same time, it’s extremely beneficial to one’s health. If you are stressed and aching because you have been at the computer all day looking for a job, a full body massage will relieve tension and symptoms associated with tension. Headaches, back aches, poor circulation, problematic skin….there are so many physical manifestations of stress. We can help reduce or eliminate that entirely. When you talk about luxury, people assume they can’t afford it. This is why we are trying to make it affordable so people can take advantage of the health aspects of spa services, especially now. If you make it affordable people can come and people can benefit from that.
TCR: I assume your employees are on a commission pay structure? How do they feel about the discounted services since it means they will be making less money?
VALENTINA: Yes, in this industry, commission is standard. I had a meeting with my employees, and we had an open conversation about what can be done for us, for our company, for our clients, so we can all still keep our jobs and service our clients as well. We came to an understanding together that we can unite our forces, to be on the same level, looking as a team that we all need to survive. We all agreed. Cutting prices was best for everyone. Our staff and our clients. The amount of people coming through the door now increased so much that we are keeping everyone very busy. And for that they are grateful.
Our prices are cut, but our services are not. We still use the same great products, and we don’t cut any services short. It’s like it’s ‘spa week’ here every week. I have to thank my staff. It is all possible because we care, that’s we called the program ‘Aquamedica Cares’. We are proud that more people have been introduced to our spa services now than ever before.
TCR: Are you worried that people will see you as ‘cheap’ or ‘discounted’ place all the time?
VALENTINA: No not at all, when times will be better, it will be better not only for us but for everybody. But we will always have promotions. Check our calendar and sign for our newsletter so every week you can know what is going on at Aquamedica.
TCR: What is your advice to other spa owners who are apprehensive to discount services?
VALENTINA: There are different theories about discounting. Some people say not to discount services, other people say it’s better to offer something free, or an upgrade. Each business owner knows their weakness or strength. You don’t need to discount everything. Look at your work week; see where you are filled, where you are not filled. Make decisions appropriately. There is no one rule for everyone. You need to look deep into your business to see what you can do to make both ends happy. It’s the job of the owner to go and be on top of it to make guests happy, make employees understand why it has to be done. I believe if I give, I will receive. You can not only take, you have to give. I am blessed with my guests that have been supporting us for so many years; today I need to make sure they are not left alone.
TCR: What is the reaction from your clients for the discounts?
VALENTINA: Our demographic became much wider because people are coming from all over now to take advantage of the specials. Most interesting is that we have repeat business from them. More and more visitors are coming to our website, which tells me the program is very popular. People are thankful that they can continue to enjoy our services. More group/corporate parties are booking now because of the price point. A big spa party for a business costs less then giving each person a big bonus. And employees appreciate the spa gift.
TCR: What is the most popular service that people are looking for?
VALENTINA: Massage is number 1 because of the health benefits. We increased our business in the nail department tremendously. Also services like microdermabrasion have become more popular now that the price is reduced. People who were once thinking about it are jumping on the chance and bringing their friends, and bringing groups. With our prices, they make an event out of it.
TCR: You said you were having large groups of people like corporate come for events, how do you accommodate them?
VALENTINA: Because our facility is 5,000 square feet and has many different departments, we can section off large parties so that everyone is being occupied at all times. We have a great dream room where we can set up food and refreshments. So people who are in treatments are in private rooms, and others are in dream room, then they switch. They can have exclusive use of our facility, sometimes we close to the public. We have a huge history of events that we manage very well; everybody works like a team player. It takes us minutes to turn our spa into a private retreat for guest speakers, parties, lectures, etc. We are surrounded by such beautiful restaurants so after people can use our locker rooms, shower, change into beautiful dresses and go out to enjoy a fantastic meal at any of our great restaurants.
TCR: who runs your facility?
VALENTINA: My son Anatoliy and I run the business, and we take a very active role in the day-to-day operations. I can’t say enough about him and what he brings to the business on a daily basis. Anatoliy’s specialty is coordinating and executing the large group events. He has a great business background, very detailed and very organized. He makes sure our clients get what they want. We make it our priority to be with the clients all of the time and to know them by name. We are always on top of it, guests know us personally, they know my son and me are the owners, they know if they need anything they just call or come see us. We don’t run our business from our office; we are always here, available for anyone.

WHEN SHOULD NJ TEENS START WAXING THEIR EYEBROWS?
It’s difficult to pin point an exact age your child or teen should begin a regular hair removal regimen. Most kids want to follow the trends of their teen idols whom are of course having their eyebrows shaped to perfecting and regularly waxing their arms or legs.
For some kids, eyebrow waxing begins much earlier then hair removal of the legs or arms. Having overgrown eyebrows can be the target of ridicule and can make young teens feel insecure. If you are considering having your child’s eyebrows shaped or waxed, there are a few important things to remember.
1. Never let your child tweeze, shave, or wax their own eyebrows. At this young age, hair is delicate. A few incorrect rips could permanently destroy the root of some hairs, preventing them from growing back.
2. Do not attempt to tweeze or wax your child’s eyebrows unless of course you are a skilled professional. Eyebrows are meant to be shaped in proper accordance with an individual’s unique facial features and structure. Over or under-plucking can leave your child with eyebrows that look like they belong on someone else’s face.
3. Only take your child to a licensed, experienced professional. Remember, hair that has been waxed or tweezed from the root can take weeks to grow back. If your child’s eyebrows are misshapen at the hands of an inexperienced waxing technician, it could take weeks for hair to re-grow again.
